Johnson Tiles to unveil spectacular 3D wall of evolving colour at Clerkenwell Design Week 2015
Johnson Tiles will once again transform the entrance to the Design Factory area at Clerkenwell Design Week 2015 – creating a spectacular 3D wall of colour to greet visitors.
The spectacular installation, entitled ‘Verve’, has been commissioned specially for the festival as part of the CDW Presents series. It will feature thousands of individually placed tiles emerging from the outer walls of The Shed at the entrance to the area, turning it into an eye-catching 3D display.
A fitting celebration of British manufacturing and design, it is being designed and handcrafted by a specialist in-house team at Johnson Tiles, with every tile made at the historic company’s factory in Stoke-on-Trent.
A combination of different shades of 15cm x 15cm gloss and matt Prismatics tiles will be set into 150 rows of protruding ‘blades’, reflecting and refracting the light to create a stunning visual effect and a striking juxtaposition to the industrial aesthetic of the Farmiloe Building where Design Factory is housed.
A dynamic flow of evolving colours will cover the entire length of The Shed, continuing around the corner and into the vibrant courtyard. Verve will take on a unique appearance depending on your viewing angle – with visitors enjoying a different visual experience as they leave to when they arrive.
On entering, the wall will present a calming neutral theme, using vertical bands of gloss and matt whites. But when leaving the courtyard, visitors will be met by a more eclectic look, with striped patterns of blues, teals and greens.
The exhibit will be created with Johnson Tiles’ iconic Prismatics range, which offers a choice of 68 different shades, making it one of the largest colour ranges of British-made ceramic tiles available.
The Staffordshire-based manufacturer will also showcase its extensive product portfolio from a dedicated stand inside the ‘Best of British’ themed Shed, displaying its three core collections, Intro, Select and Absolute, as well as previewing forthcoming designs.
This will be the second consecutive year that Johnson Tiles has sponsored Clerkenwell Design Week and commissioned a design for CDW Presents. It follows the stunning success of last year’s Prismatic Landscape, when the company’s creative team collaborated with colour consultant Ptolemy Mann to create one of the festival’s most photographed exhibits.
Darren Clanford, Creative Director at Johnson Tiles, says: “Verve promises to create an entirely different visual experience to last year’s installation, but it will be just as attention-grabbing and will really create an impact for visitors to Design Factory.
“The contrast of gloss and matt and the combination of colours will create some really intriguing effects when the light hits, and the whole appearance will change depending where you are standing and what time of day it is.
“We are delighted to be once again supporting such a key event on the design calendar, as we have done since the inception of Clerkenwell Design Week.”
