Our Editorial Director, Alys Bryan, was delighted to talk about AI—a true disruptor—at Surface Design Show 2025. They could have easily kept the conversation going for another hour (or two!) because this topic is huge.

A massive thank you to Christos Passas, Mariangela Iodice, Des Fagan, and Zuzana Phillips for bringing such sharp insights to the discussion.

Two clear themes emerged—one technological, one human.

The speakers opened by tackling what AI can do today and where it`s heading. Digital twins, concept generation, material sourcing, and architectural analysis are already shifting our workflows, and AI’s ability to fulfill our needs is evolving at an extraordinary pace. What stood out to Alys most is how AI "thinks"—it’s moving beyond rigid programming and aligning more closely with human thought with an increasingly extraordinary IQ. That shift changes the opportunity and risk that AI presents!

But if AI is becoming more human in its processes, then the human role becomes even more critical. And this is where the discussion took a deeper turn!

The second half of our debate wasn’t about software—it was about us. Yes, ‘human in the loop’ is vital to design processes, and it is already becoming embedded in the teaching of our future designers. But the bigger question is: how do we amplify a collective human voice? What could we achieve if designers, architects, and creatives had a direct say in how datasets are built and how AI tools evolve? If AI is shaping our industry, then we must shape AI at the highest level!

The conversation doesn’t stop here—we`d love to hear your thoughts. What role do you see for AI in design? And more importantly, what role do you see for us?
