“50 Warhol Wigs” Featuring ege carpets
Alex Da Corte is a rising star on the international art scene. Working with large scale installations often including wall based works, floor pieces, sculptures, lights and works from other artists, the pop-art rooted artist has an incredible love and feeling for colours and aesthetics with a sense of humour. Da Corte’s “50 Wigs” exhibition at HEART, Denmark is no exception!
The exhibition is based on items from Andy Warhol’s personal archive in Pittsburg. Collecting more than 300,000 objects in time capsules Warhol has certainly made the foundation of an interesting private collection of which 111 objects, including 50 wigs, are now staged at HEART.
Artistic flooring impact
“50 wigs” also features a floral ege carpet with a stunning oversized rose motif reflecting Da Corte’s fascination of this particular flower. Adding an intimate, soft, warm and safe feeling to the room the carpet colours echo in the pinkish walls and the two sleeping arrangements.
On the carpet, a rosy mattress is a reference to Warhol’s mother’s bed symbolising the close mother-son relationship. The enormous four poster bed represents Warhol’s own bed with a tin cookie jar placed on top. After Warhol’s death the jar was apparently found on top of his bed containing no less than 30,000 dollars set aside for “rainy days”.
ege art history
From the very beginning, art and close collaborations with artists have been an important part of ege’s core values and we constantly support several art projects with established or upcoming artists. Mads Eg Damgaard, the founder of ege, had a lifelong love for challenging the well-known and for being a pioneer in uniting business with unique design, modern art and international architecture. Why was he eager to do this? Because he was convinced that the industry and artists need each other. He believed that creative people could raise the quality of the industry’s production and that the industry could give the artists jobs and thereby a better livelihood. To Mads Eg Damgaard it was important to bring the art to the people.
Mads Eg Damgaard, founder of ege:
“In art there is always a continuation, and therefore it is important to put art into the rooms. We need the useless”
