Beyond the Walls: Newmor Elevates Ceilings as the Fifth Canvas in Interior Design

It appears that designers are turning their gaze upwards when it comes to installing wallcoverings!

Newmor have long believed that great wallcovering design doesn’t have to be limited to four walls. Ceilings are often overlooked, but increasingly, designers are recognising the ceiling as a fifth wall – a powerful canvas for storytelling, adding drama, personality, and an unexpected layer to interior spaces.

Rose Campbell, Head of Design and Marketing at Newmor, explains:

“We’re seeing a real shift in how designers are approaching interior surfaces. Ceilings are becoming an integral part of the visual narrative. Whether it’s a bold bespoke mural or a subtle structure that enhances spatial perception, treating the ceiling as a design opportunity adds a new dimension to a room.”

A perfect example can be found at The Harrison Chambers of Distinction in Belfast, where Newmor collaborated with designer Carrie Neely on a series of bespoke ceiling murals.

Hotel owner Melanie Harrison could not be more delighted with the final result, she said:

“As a hotel that champions local creatives past and present it was important for me to showcase Carrie’s Neely’s artwork. Placing the murals on the ceiling was a playful way to ensure guests are immersed in the characters the rooms are based on. In this case, the mermaids for Thomas Andrews, designer of the Titanic, and cherubs for Valentine Rennie the harpist “

Carrie Neely, the designer behind the murals, adds:

“As a designer of bespoke wallcoverings and murals for hotels and commercial clients, it’s fantastic to work with a company like Newmor. They deliver stunning colour and detail at a commercial standard, while giving me the flexibility I need in materials and finishes for my clients.”

In Porto, Portugal, the Dorte Restaurant designed by Sofia Carneiro and Alexandre Ribeiro demonstrates how using Newmor’s standard Marble Geometric design on the ceiling visually expanded the space. Printed on Newmor’s Graphite base, the mixed-material look of marble and woodblock elevates the restaurant’s interior while adding depth and sophistication.

Newmor wallcoverings have even made their way onto the high seas. Onboard Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas, a bold geometric ceiling design in the master bedroom of the Ultimate Family Suite creates a smart, grown-up sanctuary within the 1,346-square-foot, two-level suite. The custom wallcoverings offer both the visual impact Royal Caribbean is known for and the durability required for high-traffic family use.

On Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, Newmor’s designs are used to create playful and welcoming ceiling features in children’s bedrooms and play areas, underscoring how ceilings can contribute to themed storytelling in immersive spaces.

As well as offering a fully bespoke design service, all of Newmor’s digital wallcoverings can be recoloured, rescaled, and printed onto a wide variety of commercial-grade substrates, allowing designers to adapt any design to suit ceilings, walls, or both.

It’s pretty clear that ceilings are no longer an afterthought. With the right wallcovering, they become a statement in their own right.
