Blue Bamboo Launches New Range of Sustainable Solutions at the Surface Design Show
In June 2017 we featured an article looking at some of the graduate work by students from the Bucks New Uni. One of those students was Michaela Springford who spoke to us about her project Creative Consciousness. We are very happy to share her latest project by her company Blue Bamboo Design, a range of sustainable solutions which will be on display at the Surface Design Show 2019. The Surface Design Show takes place from 5 – 7 February at the Business Design Centre Islington and you’ll be able to find Blue Bamboo on Stand NT12.
Blue Bamboo Design, launched eighteen months ago by Bucks New University graduate Michaela Springford is launching their new work at this year’s Surface Design Show. Spotted by Trendease International at Maisonet Objet, Blue Bamboo has been selected to exhibit in the New Talent area of the show.
The new range focuses on hanging screens and room dividers in response to the large open areas in many interior environments today.

“Many people are distracted by others and at various times require more privacy, be that in the workplace, a hotel lobby, a restaurant. Today’s use of open plan interiors makes the most of space, but that shouldn’t be at the expense of the enjoyment and comfort in the space.” Says Michaela.
Cork fabric laser cut patterns hand manipulated
Building on her experience working with cork, the new range incorporates intricately cut laser patterns on cork fabric. “The inspiration for our designs is drawn from nature, and for this range specifically cacti and succulents. The laser cut patterns allow light to seep through, reminiscent of sunlight through trees”. Used as screening they provide seclusion but not total isolation.
Michaela began her investigations into the use of cork during her degree course and was supported by Amorim, the world’s largest cork processing company. “Cork is one of the most sustainable natural materials with acoustic, thermal and hypoallergenic properties. It is environmentally friendly and biodegradable. It’s really great to see it becoming mainstream again and used in so many innovative ways” Blue Bamboo offers a bespoke service which is place specific and cancolour match according to client’s requirements.

The shortlist for this year’s Surface Design Awards consists of an impressive 43 projects across seven categories, each entry an exemplary example of creative and innovative use of materials and lighting in both interior and exterior schemes.
