Designing for Function & Style: 7 Expert Insights on Glass Racks from Andy Thornton

At Andy Thornton, craftsmanship and innovation come together to create exceptional architectural metalwork solutions. From Victorian-style canopies and elegant balustrades to bespoke bar fittings, the company has built a reputation for delivering high-quality, design-led solutions that elevate commercial interiors.

In this exclusive Design Insider interview, we speak with Matthew Whiteley, a key member of Andy Thornton’s Metalwork department, to explore the intricate world of glass racks—a crucial yet often overlooked element of bar design. Andy Thornton’s canopies and verandas are not just functional structures; they are crafted to add a touch of elegance and historical charm to any space, blending seamlessly with both traditional and contemporary architecture.

Matthew takes us behind the scenes of Andy Thornton’s approach to designing and manufacturing ceiling-mounted racks, countertop gantries, and back bar storage solutions. From balancing aesthetics and functionality to overcoming installation challenges, he shares seven key insights on how the right glass rack can enhance both the style and efficiency of any bar or hospitality venue.

1. Understanding Glass Racks:

Glass racks are essential for maintaining an organized and efficient bar environment, and at Andy Thornton, we offer a range of solutions tailored to different needs. Our offerings include ceiling-mounted glass racks, countertop gantries, and back bar storage systems.

  • Ceiling-mounted glass racks (over-bar glass racks) are ideal for creating a sleek, unobstructed look. They free up valuable counter space and can make a bold visual statement, though they require more complex installation.
  • Countertop gantries (bar-mounted glass racks) are a more cost-effective and easier-to-install option. These racks provide easy access to glassware, although they do take up counter space, which can contribute to a busier look.
  • Back bar storage systems and liquor shelves allow for additional storage and display options, particularly useful in venues with an extensive drink selection. These systems not only keep the bar area organized but also highlight the variety and quality of the beverages on offer.

Each type of glass rack is designed to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of a bar, depending on the specific needs and style preferences of the venue.

2. Design and Functionality:

At Andy Thornton, we understand that the design of glass racks must balance functionality with style, especially in the diverse environments of bars and pubs. Our approach begins with a deep understanding of the client’s operational needs and aesthetic goals. We offer bespoke designs that are customized to fit the space perfectly, ensuring easy access to glassware while complementing the overall décor.

For instance, in venues with limited space, we might suggest ceiling-mounted racks that maximize available room without compromising on storage capacity. For bars that emphasize a particular design theme, such as industrial or Victorian, we can create glass racks that not only serve a practical purpose but also act as a focal point of the bar’s design.

Our designs are always mindful of durability and ease of use, ensuring that the glass racks not only look great but also contribute to a smooth workflow behind the bar.

3. Project Highlights:

Here are three standout examples of our glass rack installations that showcase different styles and functionalities:

  • Christie’s Brasserie & Bar, Guernsey: This project features a stunning L-shaped polished brass over-bar bottle and glass rack system. The rack, which stretches over 5 meters with a 2.25-meter return, is a perfect example of how we can blend form and function. The polished brass adds an Art Deco elegance to the bar while providing ample storage for glasses and bottles.
  • Bar & Lounge, Holiday Inn Blackpool: At the new Holiday Inn Blackpool, we installed a sleek, bar-mounted glass rack crafted from powder-coated steel with a reeded glass frontage. This angular design aligns with the hotel’s modern aesthetic, enhancing both the bar’s functionality and style. Spanning 5.2 metres, the rack maximises storage efficiency and allows quick access to various glassware, supporting both the bar and Marco’s New York Italian Restaurant onsite.
  • The Arden Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon: This project involved a grey matte over-bar gantry glass rack with a subtle satin glass structure, designed to blend seamlessly with the hotel’s sophisticated decor. The use of custom RAL colors and furniture-grade mild steel ensured the rack was both visually appealing and durable, making it a centerpiece without overshadowing the venue’s character.

4. Challenges and Solutions:

When installing glass racks, we often encounter challenges related to space constraints, structural limitations, and design integration. For example, ceiling-mounted racks require secure anchoring, which can be complex in venues with plasterboard ceilings. We overcome this by carefully assessing the ceiling structure, sometimes necessitating exploratory work to find secure anchor points, ensuring a safe and stable installation.

In other cases, we’ve had to work around existing decor or structural elements that could clash with the glass rack design. Our solution is always to tailor the design to complement the existing features, whether that means adjusting the dimensions, selecting materials that match the venue’s colour palette, or incorporating additional features like lighting.

5. Client-Centric Approaches:

At Andy Thornton, we place a strong emphasis on collaboration with our clients to ensure the final product meets—and often exceeds—their expectations. From the initial consultation, we engage with clients to understand their specific needs, preferences, and any challenges they face in their space.

We provide detailed design proposals and visualizations to give clients a clear idea of what to expect. Throughout the project, we maintain open communication, offering flexibility in design adjustments and keeping the client informed at every stage. Our goal is to deliver a product that not only aligns with the client’s vision but also enhances the operational efficiency and aesthetic appeal of their bar or pub.

6. Technological and Material Innovations:

Advancements in materials and manufacturing techniques play a crucial role in our glass rack designs. At Andy Thornton, we have incorporated these developments to offer products that are both innovative and durable. For instance, we use modern finishes like powder-coated steel and custom RAL colours to provide both durability and design flexibility.

For example we often streamline structures to allow for tidy cabling which allow electricians to install lighting technologies such as LED strips that enhance the visual appeal of the glass racks while also being energy efficient. We also frequently use materials like reeded glass and ERW mild steel to create designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional.

7. Future Trends and Directions:

The growing popularity of stemmed pint glasses and other uniquely shaped glassware, embraced by several beer brands, has prompted us to adapt our designs. This ensures that our solutions accommodate these contemporary styles alongside the traditional pint glass shape.
