Distinction Group Feature in Student Halls

Distinction Hotel Furniture is the backbone of the Distinction Group, a family firm founded in 1984 by designer and CEO Mark Elliott. Since Distinction was established, they have been successfully manufacturing and sourcing contract furniture for hotels, serviced apartments, private rented sector apartments and student accommodation.

Following the successful launch of their primary location in Dublin, LIV Student have continued to revolutionise the Student Accomodation sector with a second location in Sheffield. Opening its doors in September 2019, LIV Sheffield boasts an enormous nine floors of luxury halls and studio apartments with an abundance of bright and functional social spaces.

Having worked with developers VALEO group on LIV Dublin, Distinction Group were awarded the opportunity to source and manufacture all of the furniture for the many and varied public areas at LIV Sheffield.

On the ninth floor, students benefit from an abundance of homely spaces to interact, including a café, cinema and karaoke room as well as a communal terrace complete with panoramic views of the city. Despite its grand scale, the design intent for LIV Sheffield was pared back, warm and homely. Distinction, in collaboration with VALEO and LIV Student, achieved this by upholstering modern furnishings in heritage fabrics like tweed and tartan for a contemporary country feel.

Outside, the terrace provides an oasis from the busy student city. Deep cushioned sofas are nestled amongst deck chairs, transporting visitors to warmer climates. Throughout the design and manufacturing process, Distinction Contracts was able to draw from extensive experience manufacturing outdoor furniture for Dubai and beyond to source durable materials that are able to withstand varying weather conditions.

Each student flat also boasts a communal kitchen and living space. The décor is neutral and refined, with injections of warm wood finishes and bright colours to add character. Within the confined spacing, glass is used to create the illusion of wider open spaces. Upholstered goods have been crafted specifically with durability in mind. The PU leather dining chairs, for instance, benefit from being long lasting and wipe clean. Plush corner sofas, in neutral grey tones function to encourage socialising within the informal space. The lasting effect is eclectic and functional, fit to suit residents of varying taste and character.
