Eagle & Child, Ramsbottom, John Smith’s Great British Pub of the Year 2017
Less than 15 miles from Manchester’s centre imd and Associates have transformed the Eagle & Child in Ramsbottom into ‘John Smith’s Great British Pub of the Year 2017’ at the Morning Advertiser – John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards held at the London Hilton.
The brief for the Eagle & Child was 2 fold. The first was to extend the ground floor retail area to increase covers and space and to maximise the views of the valley. The second was to create 4-5 letting rooms on the first floor to replace the function room.
The Eagle & Child occupies a corner site on Whalley Road with a car park and large beer garden but with limited space to the rear. The site overlooks the Irwell Valley and commands view of Holcombe Moor and Peel Tower.
The Eagle & Childs Philosophy encompasses, Incredible Edible which promotes and develops a culture and opportunity for growing food, cooking and sourcing local products. The use of home-grown vegetables in some of the dishes and they are committed to reducing food miles and serving high quality fresh and seasonal produce. As a social business their key objective is to support marginalised young people into work. They are rated as one of the best food pubs in Greater Manchester.
The Eagle & Child was designed to incorporate and enhance the brands philosophy of ‘Incredible Edible’. The design included earthy and natural tones, natural light and eagle elements to enhance the existing brand.
The pub retains its local pub feel in the bar area, revealing the windows behind the bar to flood the bar area with natural light. The use of brass and glass ensures that the colours are warm and add a sense of luxury. Clean lines mixed with the use of modern and natural materials help create a contemporary public house that references the past whilst creating a sustainable environment that looks to the future.
imd and ASSOCIATES created a new sustainable green roof full height glass orangery extension offering diners spectacular views across the Irwell Valley to Holcombe Moor and Peel Tower. Existing stone work juxtaposes clean modern lines throughout.
Upstairs imd and ASSOCIATES created 5 individually designed owl themed boutique bedrooms. Two suites with Juliette balconies with views across the Irwell Valley. Clean lines mixed with contemporary and traditional touches to reference the modern vision for the business and history of the building.
imd and ASSOCIATES work closely with their clients on each and every project to deliver innovative environments that are beautiful and functional.
