Graduate Profiles: Kingston University

Over the past week we have been profiling design graduates and have received an overwhelming response from both students wishing to be included and from our readers.

Today we profile 4 outstanding designers, each will graduate from the BA Product & Furniture Design degree course at Kingston University and will be exhibiting at New Designers Part 2 from the 5th – 8th July.   

Matt Hayden will be exhibiting his striking Optical Chandelier.  Matt explains: ‘The Optical Chandelier is a luxury ceiling light that enhances the properties of plastic, side-emitting optical fibre. It is designed as a visual centrepiece within high end domestic and contract interiors. 

Each strand of fibre transports a warm glow of light from thirty six super bright LEDs, gently dissipating as it passes through the clear acrylic plates, building into a bright arrangement of spotlights at the tip. The flexibility of the optical fibre allows an array of warm shades to be seen at the slightest change of direction. The reflectiveness of the acrylic plates as well as the polished aluminium housing for the electronics, creates an illusory experience for the user.

The optical chandelier is a modern take on the classic luxury lighting that has brightened up high end spaces for centuries. It causes the user to rethink the capabilities of light when combined with  other materials.’

We congratulate Matt on being accepted into the prestigious Royal College of Art ‘I hope to pursue my passion in lighting design and focus on the users experience and interaction with light. I will be developing these interests while studying the design products course at RCA next year.’

Mathis Burmeister began by explaining the concept behind his modular shelving system: ‘Modular shelving system with the possibility of an individual extension.

Different heights and a uniform principle create manifold opportunities. The origin is to have the ability to adapt to the current environment and to accompany and support the user.  Any number of frames can be arranged by help of the interconnecting shelves.’

We were fascinated to hear the Mathis’ plans for his future: ‘After my graduation, I would like to go to Germany to get a Master’s degree.  Following this, I would then come back in the long term to work as a Product-Designer.’

Molly Mason told us a little more about her design Hiatus: ‘Hiatus is a solution for young professionals in need of a relaxed space in the working environment. Like it’s name, Hiatus provides a break in continuity from the formal work desk. Completed with a round upholstered seat, large bolster and circular wooden surface Hiatus provides a place for miscellaneous tasks combining productivity and comfort. ‘

We love Molly’s ethos for her future ‘By designing with the balance of process and function I aim to create useful and beautiful objects.’

Jisue Park will be exhibiting several exciting design collections, here we learn more about her Hanger Rail System: ‘Creating a hanger system, which encourages the user to display objects they use on a daily basis.  This organisation of key belongings creates a personal order.  The system is designed to grow and reduce supporting families needs change over tim­­­e.  From single person to couples, children and families.’

Jisue is another graduate with a clear design ethos ‘As a designer, I will always look to design and create products that expands on everyday activities, making people’s lives easier by constantly observing my surroundings.’
