Please can you introduce yourself?

Hi, my name is Jan Erika. I am an artist and I live in Surrey, where I find inspiration in the serene landscapes and natural beauty surrounding me. My work as an abstract artist is deeply intertwined with my experiences and passions, particularly my background in music. As a classically trained concert cellist, I have always sought ways to merge my love for music with my artistic endeavours. This unique combination allows me to express emotions and ideas in a way that resonates both visually and sonically. My journey as an artist is one of continuous exploration, and I am always eager to find new ways to connect with audiences through my work.

Did your rural upbringing have an impact on your artwork?

Yes, my rural upbringing has had a profound impact on my artwork, particularly in my relationship with colour and nature. Growing up surrounded by the changing seasons, I developed an early appreciation for the vivid colours that emerge in spring. The first pops of colour after a long winter felt like a celebration, a rejuvenation of life, and this is something I strive to capture in my paintings. The natural world, with its vibrant hues and dynamic forms, has always been a source of inspiration for me. This connection to nature continues to influence my work, as I constantly seek to infuse my art with the same sense of renewal and energy that I experienced during my childhood.

As well as being a sought-after abstract artist, you are also a classically trained concert cellist. How do your musical roots influence your artwork?

Music is an integral part of my creative process, whether I am aware of it or not. The rhythms, tones, and emotions conveyed through music often seep into my paintings, influencing the way I approach composition, colour, and form. Sometimes, it’s the mood of a particular piece of music that inspires a new direction in my work, while at other times, it’s the structure or flow of a melody that guides my hand. Music has a unique ability to convey emotions without words, and I strive to achieve a similar effect in my paintings. My background as a cellist has taught me to listen deeply, not just with my ears, but with my entire being, and this is something I bring into my artwork, creating pieces that resonate with the same emotional depth and complexity as a musical composition.

Can you describe your creative process and design approach?

My creative process begins with a deep understanding of what my client or collaborator is seeking. I start by asking myself a series of questions: What are they looking for? What do they need? What is missing that I can provide? These questions help me to get to the heart of the project and to understand the underlying needs of the client. I have learned over the years that this is crucial, as it allows me to tailor my work to meet their expectations, often in ways they hadn’t even realized. Once I have a clear sense of direction, I begin experimenting with different ideas, exploring how far I can push the boundaries of design while still maintaining the integrity of the concept. My approach is both intuitive and analytical, combining a deep sense of creativity with a strong focus on meeting the client’s needs. This method has proven to be about 90% effective, though there is always room for learning and adaptation. Every project is a journey of discovery, and I embrace the challenge of finding the perfect balance between artistic expression and practical application.

What role does colour play in your work and how do you use colour as a tool to impact the viewer?

Colour is at the very heart of my work. It is both a tool and a language through which I communicate emotions, ideas, and moods. My approach to colour is instinctual; it’s something I feel rather than think about in a technical sense. There’s a certain balance and attraction that I seek when working with colours, and I know a piece is finished when everything just feels right. Colour has the power to evoke strong emotional responses, and I use it to create depth, contrast, and harmony within my paintings. Whether it’s the bold, dynamic hues that grab attention or the subtle, muted tones that invite contemplation, colour plays a critical role in shaping the overall impact of my work. I believe that the right combination of colours can transform a space, influence the viewer’s mood, and even tell a story without the need for words. My goal is to create art that resonates on a deep, emotional level, using colour as the primary vehicle for that connection.

Can you tell us about your collaboration with Muraspec, how did this partnership come about?

The collaboration with Muraspec emerged from my aspiration to partner with one of the most esteemed and reputable companies in the UK, renowned for its exceptional quality and innovation in wallcoverings. Muraspec’s prestigious standing in the industry made them the perfect choice for bringing my abstract art to a larger scale. I reached out to Tariq Rashid, the Managing Director of Muraspec, to discuss this exciting opportunity. His immediate enthusiasm and support for my work were pivotal in making this collaboration possible. Working with Muraspec has been an enriching experience, allowing me to explore new creative horizons and infuse vibrant energy into wallcoverings. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together.

Can you take us on a journey through the two collections you have launched with Muraspec?

The first collection I launched with Muraspec is a mural series that features large-scale images full of dynamic colours and energy. Many of these pieces were painted in Paris, a city known for its artistic vibrancy, and this is reflected in the bold, expressive designs. The murals are intended to make a statement, to transform a space with their presence and to evoke a sense of movement and emotion. The second collection called the Erno Collection, is inspired by the iconic architect Ernö Goldfinger and his brutalist masterpiece, the Trellick Tower in West London. This collection is a tribute to the strength and resilience of brutalist architecture but with a twist. I wanted to capture the powerful lines and forms of this style while introducing a softer side through the use of beautiful colours and tonal hues. The designs are vast and emotive, striking a balance between boldness and delicacy. Each piece within the collection is crafted to embody the duality of strength and elegance, making them suitable for a wide range of settings.

Could you highlight any particular designs or features from this collection that you’re especially proud of?

I am incredibly proud of both collections and what they offer. Each design within the collections has been carefully crafted to capture the essence of the themes we set out to explore. In the mural collection, I’m particularly pleased with how the large-scale images convey a sense of movement and energy, transforming any space into a dynamic environment. The use of bold colours and expressive forms in these murals really brings them to life. As for the Erno Collection, I’m proud of how we were able to balance the powerful lines of brutalist architecture with softer, more inviting elements. The collection reflects both strength and subtlety, and I believe it offers something unique and versatile for a variety of settings. The scaled patterns and bold colours, combined with light, delicate motifs, create a harmonious blend that is both visually striking and soothing. These collections represent a significant achievement in my artistic career, and I am excited to see how they will be received by clients and designers alike.

My aim is to continue creating art that resonates with people on a deep, emotional level, using colour and form to tell stories and evoke feelings. The possibilities are endless, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
