KAY by Roca: A Faucet Inspired by the Interface Between Land and Sea
A modern bathroom is characterized by clear, geometric forms and a minimalist aesthetic. The new KAY faucet series from Roca is an example of how designs for such bathrooms need not be reduced to either “round” or “square”. The faucets by Munich-based designer Stefan Diez are both: KAY sets a timelessly modern accent in contemporary bathroom design.
Kay faucet collection – inspired by the interface between land and sea
Of course, a global bathroom- and sanitary-systems specialist like Roca also has to be in the mainstream and its products should not be too polarizing. Kay is a rectangular faucet per se – but its shape appears to have been carved out of the whole and appears solid without being edgy. Above all, the product is intended to serve interior designers and architects as a building block for their bathroom planning.
Challenge to conventions: The angular faucet with the round controls
Diez drew inspiration from an unlikely source: mooring bollards. These robust steel fixtures on the eponymous „quay“ walls that secure ships to the shore embody a fascinating balance of strength and restraint – a concept that became the basis for KAY. And it fits with Roca’s brand concept, because in Mediterranean life, the quay is the interface between land and sea.
Reinterpretation of the angular faucet
KAY challenges the traditional idea of angular faucets. Instead of appealing to stereotypical associations of masculinity and angularity, the series offers a nuanced interpretation of stability, precision and calm. The characteristic element is the oval-shaped operating lever, which sits boldly on the base body and gives the faucet a playful lightness. There is nothing to decode: the faucet is self-explanatory.
Complete set of mixers
The fitting line is available as a complete range in many variants, which makes the planner’s work easier: at the washbasin as a single-lever mixer in three different heights, but also as a single-hole mixer with side operation and as a three-hole mixer with two side valves for cold and hot water. In addition, there are bath and shower mixers for surface and concealed installation. Roca has kept a low profile when it comes to finishes: the colours are matt white and matt black; the finishes are brushed chrome, stainless steel, brass and graphite.
KAY embodies well-thought-out design that is timeless, recognizable and durable. The series combines precision and emotion, reimagining the role of an angular faucet in modern spaces. It is both functional and sculptural. Stefan Dietz, the designer behind the product, is aware of the faucet’s distinctiveness:
“With KAY, we wanted to challenge conventions and create a multifaceted interpretation of power and elegance.”
