Earlier this week, Design Insider`s Editorial and Marketing Director, Alys Bryan, had the privilege of speaking with Sheffield Hallam students as part of their inspiring Future Now module.

Alys` presentation was all about inspiring the next generation of designers and showing them how the commercial interiors sector can offer incredible opportunities for growth, creativity, and innovation.

Alys shared insights into the world of Commercial Interiors UK (CIUK), showcasing how our organisation drives industry growth through collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. She also introduced the students to Design Insider, a platform that facilitates industry-leading conversations and champions meaningful design.

The session explored 4 diverse approaches to sustainability by commercial suppliers and manufacturers:

- Milliken: Leading with Universal Fibers Thrive® Matter, a recycled carbon-positive fibre innovation.

- Hansgrohe: Innovating water- and energy-saving technologies to reduce CO2 and resource consumption.

- Hypnos: Revolutionising logistics with electric vehicles and renewable biodiesel.

- Humanscale: Achieving B Corp certification, blending planet-positive manufacturing with social responsibility.

But this wasn’t just about industry highlights—it was also a call to action. Alys left the students with a thought-provoking question - What is your role as a designer in creating a sustainable future?

As well as Alys` presentation the 200+ students had the opportunity to learn from Katy Stevens, Head of CSR + Sustainability at European Outdoor Group, Andy Callard, Enterprise Coach at SHU, Corin Mellor, Creative Director, at David Mellor Design, Jane Turnbull, Research Associate in Circularity at Manchester Fashion Institute, Rebecca Finney, Creative Director of Jasper Sanders + Partners, Prof. Martin Mayfield-Tulip, School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at University of Sheffield, and Pete McKee, Artist., What an incredible line-up!
