They have worked closely with the Maybourne Hotel Group for many years supplying custom made carpets and rugs for their portfolio of luxury hotels including The Berkley and The Connaught.
With a passion for creativity, The Berkeley is renowned for being at the forefront of luxury design with a long history of collaborations with leading designers including David Collins, Helen Green and André Fu.
The Blue Bar was originally designed by David Collins in 2000. Collin’s incorporated restored original features designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the original Berkeley and created the striking ‘Lutyens Blue’ colour scheme.
In 2016, an extension into a state-of the art glass pavilion led to a refresh of the Blue Bar by one of the UK and Europe’s leading luxury Interior Designers and David Collins’ protégé, Robert Angell. Angell retained the soul of the Blue Bar keeping the ‘Lutyens Blue’ colour scheme left in place, along with many of the original listed architectural features.
New elements included mid-century inspired furniture handmade by Ben Whistler, as well as two striking hand tufted rugs designed by Loomah in collaboration with Robert Angell.
Loomah were thrilled to be approached by Robert Angell to design two bespoke rugs for the Blue Bar. “Robert has a unique approach to interior design, offering a highly considered and bespoke service that is very much in line with our own.” – Andrew, Managing Director of Loomah Bespoke Carpets and Rugs.
The custom made rugs drew their inspiration from the abstract paintings of contemporary German artist, Gerhard Richter.
The trend for abstract rugs has become increasingly popular over the last 7 years and Loomah’s design team have perfected the art of translating this art form into cutting edge hand tufted rug designs.
“Gerhard Richter is renowned for predominately red compositions” says Antonina, Designer at Loomah, “and whilst varying shades of blue dominate the colour palette, in homage to Richter, a bold splash of red adds striking visual contrast.”
Achieving the desired painterly appearance is a complex process and involves the intricate blending of colours. Over 30 colours are used in the designs for the Blue Bar with a combination of shades selected from the tuft box and bespoke colours developed to work harmoniously with the space.
“We developed the the initial concept for the larger of the two bespoke rugs before adapting the design for the smaller rug,” adds Andrew. “The use of the same concept for both rugs not only adds impact, but seamlessly ties the two contrasting areas of the space together.”

Due to complex nature of these custom made rugs, both designs were hand-tufted from two ply yarn which not only offers superior design definition but also increased durability.
