Meet the Judges for the Next Generation Student Award 2025

As the Commercial Interiors UK (CIUK) and Design Insider prepare to celebrate a new wave of design talent with the Next Generation Student Award 2025, we’re proud to introduce this year’s judging panel. Each judge brings unique expertise, an eye for innovation, and a shared passion for fostering emerging designers. With the generous support of Silentnight, this year’s awards will offer an unparalleled platform for second-year Interior Design students across the UK, who will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity in front of industry leaders.

Next Generation 2024 Winners

Reflecting on last year’s success, which saw Maddie Benn-Banham from Sheffield Hallam University take home the prize with her captivating Manchester-inspired design, the 2025 awards promise to reach new heights. The winner will receive a two-week work placement with Jolie, renowned for crafting immersive, sensory environments, providing a transformative experience at the heart of the design industry. The prize presentation will take place on April 24, 2025, at Halle St Peters in Manchester.

This year’s judges include returning experts alongside new voices, each bringing a fresh perspective to the judging process. Let’s take a closer look at the panel who will help guide and recognize the brightest talent in commercial interiors.

Diana Celella – Director, The Drawing Room Interiors

Diana Celella returns to the panel this year, bringing her extensive expertise in healthcare design and evidence-based interiors. An internationally recognized designer and Past President of the Society of British and International Design (SBID), Diana’s career has been defined by her dedication to creating impactful, compassionate spaces. She has been instrumental in advancing design that prioritizes functionality and emotional well-being, especially in healthcare environments.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Diana is a University Lecturer for MA Interior Design, where she shares her passion for design with the next generation. Diana reflects fondly on last year’s entries, stating, “I must commend all participants for their outstanding efforts in this competition. The quality of work and innovative solutions showcased by each entry was truly impressive. Furthermore, the confidence and professionalism displayed during the verbal presentations were exceptional.” Her discerning eye and commitment to quality will once again elevate this year’s judging process.

Kelley Ralph – Experience Manager, Edyn Ltd.

As the Experience Manager for Edyn’s lifestyle brand Locke, Kelley Ralph brings a vibrant, community-cantered approach to the judging panel. Kelley’s role in curating immersive atmospheres for Locke’s design-led hotels has seen her champion creative partnerships in art, music, food, and retail, ensuring each Locke location serves as a cultural touchpoint for guests and locals alike.

Her background as a television and event producer informs her creative approach, emphasizing narrative-driven, experiential spaces. Kelley’s enthusiasm for discovering new talent and fostering collaboration will play a pivotal role in evaluating designs that aim to transform environments into social and creative hubs.

Sarah Wakefield – Creative Director, Jolie

As Creative Director at Jolie, Sarah Wakefield is known for her expertise in creating spaces that transcend traditional aesthetics through immersive, multi-sensory design. With a successful track record that includes high-profile projects at Soho House, Sarah’s work blends creativity, technical capability, and functionality to evoke emotional responses. Her leadership at Jolie emphasizes a nuanced understanding of human behaviour and sensory engagement, often collaborating with neuroscientists to amplify the impact of each space.

Sarah will lead the team which will mentor the award-winning student during their placement with Jolie, guiding them through hands-on experiences that push the boundaries of conventional design. Her unique perspective on sensory-driven design will be crucial in identifying student work that challenges norms and captivates audiences.
