New Look, New Feel, New Hotel
BCFA member Roca will be presenting their London gallery autumn exhibition in one week (17th September) named “The Data and Life of Great Future Cities”, which coincides with London Design Festival. Design Insider took this chance to explore the projects Roca have been involved in, leading up to their exciting event.
Roca have created a stylish and elegant bathroom for a new boutique hotel in East London. New Road hotel, based in Whitechapel, offers a contemporary and stylish ambience, which according to the owners is set to be the number one place for sleeping, eating, drinking and meeting. Featuring both Roca and BCFA member Laufen, the bathroom is the epitome of modern design and luxurious comfort. It was the vision of three brothers that created New Road hotel, being a very special project to them: the brothers decided to build their hotel on the site of the Service House textile factory, where their father once worked. Originally designed by architect Hume Victor Kerr, the building had always been used as a garments factory up until the turn of the millennium. However, since its closure in 2000, the building has remained empty – that is until 2011 when the family decided to convert it into a hotel.
New Road Hotel was also inspired by the New York metropolis, featuring 80 bedrooms which have all been cleverly designed to maximise space, whilst ensuring the unique factory features have not been lost. The original exposed brickwork remains along with the original large windows. Roca worked with London-based contract furnishing company, Concept Contracts to deliver a complete bathroom solution for the hotel.
“The Roca Group has an impressive portfolio and being able to combine both the Roca and Laufen brands within one space has created the perfect solution for The New Road Hotel.” – Warren Stimson, Director at Concept Contracts.
Just as with the majority of spaces in the hotel, space was an important factor when it came to the bathroom design. Warren has been working with the Roca Group for many years and knew they had the compact but high-quality products the space required. The hotel’s interior design and open plan architecture reflects both its heritage and location within London’s famous East End, where the garment trade boomed in the 1960s.
“New Road Hotel is a virtually unique space. Its heritage is one of the buildings most interesting features and the owners were really keen to keep this rich history running through the interior décor whilst also adding a modern twist.” – Warren Stimson, Director at Concept Contracts.
Concept Contacts sourced a Roca The Gap wall-hung WC along with the Laufen Val basin for each room. The Gap range from Roca is a versatile collection that enables hotels to optimise the design and look of any bathroom space. Created by renowned industrial designer Antonio Bullo, The Gap features modern and stylish lines whilst delivering both a compact and functional bathroom collection.
The Val bathroom collection from Laufen has been designed for the Swiss bathroom specialist by star designer Konstantin Grcic from Munich. Simple architectural lines, extremely narrow edges and fine surface structures make the washbasins of this collection globally unique.
