Reinventing Hilton Gateshead Newcastle: A Riverside Hotel’s Contemporary Transformation

Furniture Fusion have been working with Hilton Hotels for many years now, and their latest project took them to the North East, creating and supplying furniture for a very popular riverside hotel that looks over the iconic Tyne Bridge.

The project was completed in three phases, encompassing the buzzy restaurant and bar, meetings and events space and the large lobby area.

Hilton Gateshead Newcastle is in an ideal central location, therefore making it a popular choice for business and leisure travellers – it is close to the Utility Arena, St James’ Park & Newcastle’s popular nightlife, and it is also well-connected for travel by road, rail, and air. The hotel is busy all throughout the day and so it was important that all of the furniture that was supplied was going to be hard-wearing, and allowed for flexible use of the spaces, as well as, of course, look great.

The new-look lobby makes a great first impression on guests arriving at the hotel. It is bright, spacious and is dominated by full height glazing that showcases the Tyne Bridge and river outside. Furniture Fusion supplied both their Atlas lounge chair and sofa, which sit perfectly alongside the Circuit coffee table. This creates smaller seating zones with a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests as soon as they enter. Also in the lobby is the Bellevue high back lounge chair, which is positioned in an appealing spot to relax and enjoy the riverside views.

Furniture Fusion’s team always enjoy an opportunity to create bespoke pieces for a project, delivering something unique that was designed to the client’s specifications. It is something that they pride themselves on get excited about in any project. The Hilton Gateshead Newcastle’s’ riverside restaurant is a popular choice for guests and other diners and therefore needs to be able to cater for everyone from solo diners, families, and friends through to large groups. Once the design had been finalised, and the frame made, the bespoke banquette seating was upholstered in a warm burgundy leather and an abstract patterned fabric. These look great alongside the Sinatra chairs, which are upholstered in a navy fabric and leather. The banquettes give the contemporary look of fixed seating but are moveable, allowing the restaurant operational flexibility in terms of changing layouts to respond to demand throughout the changing needs of clients and guests.

Furniture Fusion’s Sinatra chair also appears in a warm ochre yellow which works well with the solid ash tabletops. The bar stools from the Sinatra collection are upholstered in a deep ruby-coloured leather and velvet fabric, adding warmth to the light and airy bar area, and working well with the high bar tables.

Meetings and events are a key part of the Hilton Gateshead Newcastle operation, hosting corporate events, conferences, and meetings across a suite of rooms. Furniture Fusion created a bespoke solid wood console table which adds an elegant touch to this area of the hotel. The team also supplied the Luna sofa to provide additional seating for delegates and event guests. This is a compact, stylish piece with mid-century influences. Upholstered in a smart slate blue with stitched details on the back, it’s another practical addition to the interior that adds interest and sophistication to a busy space.

The FF team said it was a pleasure to work once again with Abi Perry-Jones and team at Jones AD on this project – Abi’s experience in hospitality design means it’s always a creative, collaborative way of working and we think the end result looks fantastic.
