Sunbury Design: Full Grain Real Leather

Sunbury Design are pleased to introduce our Full Grain Real Leather collection. Made up of four, high quality, aniline dyed genuine leather qualities, each exhibiting different characteristics and meeting crib 5 (BS7176 Medium Hazard) fire retardancy for contract, hospitality and IMO upholstery use.

Created to offer maximum choice for the designer and specifier, the collection includes a range of colours in Cassidy, a natural, half grain semi aniline leather with matt finish and cracked appearance. Heritage, a semi aniline leather with medium sheen and slight pull-up characteristics. Outlaw, an economically priced leather but still with a quality vintage look and high performance, and finally Unique, a distinctive, classic wax finish and distressed appearance. The result is a comprehensive selection of high quality real leathers, each with their own character to suit every commercial interior project where only the feel, durability and aesthetics of genuine leather will do.

All of our qualities are responsibly sourced, tanned in Italy and include a protective coating to help against everyday spills and soiling. These hides are inherently FR which is a permanent part of the tanning process rather than a separate chemical application.

As with all new products from Sunbury Design, sustainability and environmental impact plays an important part of what we offer. Real leather is a timeless and durable material with significant sustainability potential when produced responsibly. Leather is a natural, biodegradable product that can last for decades, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing waste. This longevity is a key sustainable attribute, as high-quality leather such as these, when looked after correctly, will get even better with age developing more patina and character in use.

Another important aspect of leather’s sustainability is its role in the circular economy. Leather is a byproduct of the food industry which would otherwise go to waste. This reduces the overall environmental impact by maximizing the use of animal products. Additionally, leather is repairable and can be repurposed, recycled, or upcycled into new products, further extending its lifecycle.

Innovations in leather manufacturing are also making the production process more sustainable with strict regulation for tanneries with regards to environmental compliance. By adopting water-saving and waste-reduction practices, the entire supply chain is becoming more eco-friendly. Liquid and solid waste are treated onsite and the use of harmful chemicals such as Chrome VI, mercury, arsenic, phenol and formaldehyde are not used by the tannery in the production of our leathers which enforces ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) regulations as well as conforming to EU/UK REACH legislation.

In addition, ethical sourcing and traceability is extremely important. We focus on obtaining raw materials from suppliers who prioritize animal welfare and sustainable land management, ensuring that the leather industry contributes to regenerative agricultural practices.

Leather’s durability, recyclability, and role in reducing waste when sourced responsibly make it a genuine sustainable choice. As we all become more conscious of environmental impacts, the leather industry is evolving to meet these demands by incorporating more eco-friendly practices, ensuring that leather remains a genuinely sustainable choice for the fashion and furniture industries.
