Modern, discerning and increasingly environmentally-aware consumers are keener than ever to know the provenance and impact of everything. Whether that’s the sustainable standards of the furniture they purchase for their home, or the ethics behind food or the carbon footprint of a trip away, for example. With this in mind, the bed and furniture industry faces the task of being able to not only create products that are high-quality, built using natural, sustainable materials, but that will also limit its impact on the environment at the end of its life.
The Buckinghamshire-based business has spent over ten years pioneering sustainable sleep across the bedding industry whilst providing specialist, safe and durable beds and mattresses to its array of hospitality partners. As the go-to name in sleep comfort, Hypnos is trusted with providing the key component to the all-important perfect night’s sleep at hotels around the globe.
This wide-ranging commitment to the environment has impacted every single area of the business, from purchasing right through to how Hypnos’ master craftsmen operate. For instance, Hypnos was the world’s first carbon neutral bedmaker and all of its mattresses are created using 100% natural fibres such as horse hair, wool, cotton and latex, meaning that they are fully recyclable and contribute to the circular economy rather than ending up at landfill. All of the timber used in the divan bases of its beds is sources from sustainably managed forests and both FSC® and PEFC™ compliant.
This focus on sustainably sourced materials and products with traceability means that Hypnos Beds offers its hospitality partners the chance to meet and exceed the growing demand from consumers for environmental credentials from the brands it interacts with. Hotels and hospitality providers using the beds or mattresses bolster their own green credentials through these sustainable sleep solutions.
Earlier this year, Hypnos’ successful sustainable business model was recognised and honoured with a 2020 Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. Given out to those companies that can demonstrate the very highest environmental standards in all of its practices, this was the brand’s second Queen’s Award following its first accolade in 2017.
Richard Naylor, Sustainable Development Director at Hypnos Beds, believes that this focus on the environment is only going to see increased attention in the months and years to come. He said:
“There can be no doubt that the issue of sustainability is an incredibly important topic at the moment. From product design through to how we manufacture and distribute our mattresses, sustainability plays a key role in every decision we make as a business and we were delighted that this was recognised earlier this year with the prestigious Queen’s Award.”
The latest step in Hypnos sustainability journey came at the end of 2019 when it unveiled the Origins Collection, a ground-breaking industry-first partnership with Red Tractor assured food standards. This new collection brought a new level of traceability to the mattresses as the wool used could be traced all the way back to Red Tractor assured farms across the UK.
As it continues to supply beds to the finest homes and hotels around the world including Marriott, Soho House and InterContinental Hotel Group, Hypnos offers its hospitality partners an excellent opportunity to boost their green credentials in turn. Through using sustainable sleep solutions in its accommodation, these hospitality brands are able to show their own commitment to the environment to discerning and ethically aware travellers.
Looking to the future, Richard continued:
“Moving forwards, we expect companies to secure a more responsible and ethical approach to the lifecycle of their products, from cradle to grave, forging partnerships with responsible suppliers and recognising their role in communities and to the local environment. Our pioneering approach to sourcing sustainable cotton and wool for our mattresses means that farmers are rewarded fairly so they can invest in securing a reliable future. The hope is that in the coming years, sustainable design and sourcing such as this will have become a standard way to make beds.”
