THDP Reimagines Masseria Donna Menga: A Timeless Blend of Authenticity and Sustainability
Tucked away in the picturesque countryside of Salento, just moments from the pristine shores of Porto Cesareo, Masseria Donna Menga is a five-star retreat where history and contemporary design come together in perfect harmony. As part of the esteemed Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) collection, this exclusive resort offers an experience of refined luxury deeply rooted in the region’s heritage.
The transformation of this 16th-century masseria, a site protected by the Superintendency for Cultural Heritage, was entrusted to THDP, who led both the architectural consultancy and interior design. Their approach carefully preserved the building’s authentic character while enhancing its architectural and cultural significance, seamlessly blending past and present.
The name “Donna Menga” pays tribute to Domenica, a historical figure whose story remains wrapped in mystery, adding an air of intrigue to this remarkable destination.
A Design That Embraces the Past and the Future
Manuela Mannino said:
“We embraced the concept of ‘less is more,’ minimizing interventions to preserve the soul of the structure. Sustainability was the guiding principle: local materials such as Lecce stone, oiled wood, and wrought iron were used to respect the historical and environmental context. This is truly a plastic-free project.”
The masseria’s 21 rooms stay true to the essence of the original structure, featuring bespoke furnishings handcrafted from solid oiled oak by local artisans. Every element reflects the site’s rich heritage, from the meticulously restored stone vaults to the walls finished in natural hydraulic lime. By weaving together raw, authentic materials with refined craftsmanship, the design fosters a seamless conversation between history and modernity—offering understated luxury that feels both timeless and effortless.
History as the Common Thread
Once a place for drying tobacco and tomatoes, Masseria Donna Menga has preserved its original structure, allowing its past to shape its present identity.
Designed around a central courtyard, the building consists of three main sections. The main wing, historically dedicated to agricultural labor, now houses the reception and lounge area, seamlessly integrated into the former carriage passage. Enclosed by a large glass window, this space opens onto the inner garden, creating a tranquil connection between indoors and out. Nearby, four guest rooms feature restored vaulted ceilings and peaceful garden views.
The lateral wing, once home to horse stables and fountains, has been thoughtfully transformed into seven garden rooms, offering a serene retreat immersed in nature.
At the heart of the masseria stands a monumental tower, now home to a luxurious suite that maintains its original openings, preserving its historic charm. Two junior suites feature plunge pools and expansive outdoor lounges, providing an intimate escape within the estate.
Beyond the walls, the outdoor spaces blend effortlessly with the surrounding landscape. Reed pergolas and wooden beams offer natural shade, while large ceramic jars and locally crafted woven straw lamps enhance the rustic elegance. The landscape design, focused on sustainability, incorporates succulents and Mediterranean shrubs, reducing water consumption while staying true to the wild beauty of Salento.
An Authentic and Sustainable Experience
Designed to foster a deep connection with nature, the common areas seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living. Guests can unwind by the pool, rejuvenate in the intimate spa—which features a hammam, massage room, and Technogym fitness centre—or indulge in the flavours of Salento at Radici, the masseria’s signature restaurant.
At the heart of the culinary experience is the organic garden, where fresh, local ingredients inspire a menu rooted in sustainability and regional tradition. Every dish is a celebration of the land, crafted with an awareness of both seasonality and environmental impact.
Sustainability extends into the reception area, where re-used materials tell a story of thoughtful design. Behind the solid wood counter, decorative panels repurposed from old worktables add character, while handcrafted lamps made by a local fisherman reflect a deep connection to the territory.
The spa, a sanctuary of relaxation, is brought to life through a harmonious blend of stone, wood, and glossy blue tiles, evoking an atmosphere of tranquillity with subtle Eastern influences.
Rooms and Suites: The Essence of Luxury
The rooms and suites at Masseria Donna Menga embody a philosophy of minimalist luxury, where natural materials and artisanal craftsmanship take centre stage. Thoughtfully designed with custom solid wood furniture, local stone flooring, and handcrafted lighting, each space reflects a commitment to authenticity.
Mannino emphasises:
“There is no plastic here. Every detail is designed to create an authentic and sustainable experience.”
Among the 21 rooms, three suites feature spacious furnished patios, offering a private retreat for relaxation. All rooms open onto private gardens, while the four rooms within the former stables overlook the inner courtyard and pool, preserving the masseria’s historic character. Every design choice maintains a deep-rooted connection to tradition and the surrounding landscape.
The bathrooms adopt an open-plan design, with showers and sinks inspired by old livestock fountains, seamlessly integrated into the sleeping area. A separate WC cubicle ensures privacy, while tiles—inspired by Lecce stone with a subtle sheen—enhance the interplay of light, a central theme of the project. Bronze-colored faucets, reminiscent of traditional wrought iron agricultural tools, add a refined rustic touch.
Further reinforcing the connection to the region, the wardrobes are wrapped in natural raffia wallpaper, echoing the aesthetic of traditional reed structures used for shading. The architect explains:
“The bedside lamps were crafted by a local fisherman we met during our material sourcing trips.”
Adding to the understated elegance, bedside tables carved from Lecce stone monoliths and locally sourced stone flooring laid in a classic pattern seamlessly integrate the natural beauty of Salento with contemporary comfort.
