Timorous Beasties Co-Founders, Paul Simmons and Alistair McAuley
Alistair McAuley, Co-Founder of Timorous Beasties comments:
‘At the very heart of our studio is an enduring passion and reverence for print and textiles guided by a drive for experimentation and long-held desire for creating the very finest quality products. We have always sought to do and make things our own, and to try and push ourselves and the boundaries of what we do. Our new Stucco Collection is no exception, implementing innovative production techniques and materials.’
The starting point for Stucco was a tongue in cheek take on Le Corbusier’s declaration on ‘The Law of Ripolin’ in which the famous architect declared that whitewashed walls had a spiritual and moral cleansing power.
Paul Simmons, Co-Founder of Timorous Beasties comments:
‘We imagined a new beginning, where all around us, pattern on pattern clutters our minds, and this oversaturation becomes overwhelming. We envisioned moving into a new house and painting and decorating everything in white, but this time, to Le Corbusier’s horror, we would use ornate plasterwork and damasks as a reference and paint and print over everything with thick opaque ink. Wallpapers become covered, only leaving parts of patterns seen, the paint begins to crack and split, so that only sections manage to peek through.’
The Stucco Collection includes eleven new wallcoverings made from sustainable forest paper and five new fabric designs including lace, hand printed linen and woven jacquards, all designed and uniquely crafted in the UK.
The Emulsion Imagination Wallpaper, Rip Swathe Wallpaper, Painted Pugin Wallpaper and Whitewash Rose Wallpaper were inspired by Timorous Beasties take on ‘The Law of Ripolin’, where sections of patterns peek through, creating a layering and depth to the designs.
Ripolin Panel Hand Printed Wallpaper
The Ripolin Panel is an extravagant wallpaper and its unique design is an example of Timorous Beasties’ pioneering use of digital printing technologies mixed with hand printing techniques, and is fully compostable.
Stucco Stripe Wallpaper & Stucco Stripe Fabric
The Stucco Stripe, Cornice Crown, Coving Row and Acanthus Leaf hand printed wallpapers feature simple patterns, taken from the ornamental decoration that is often found in the plaster work on the ceilings of Victorian apartments. The linear pattern references the straight edges of the rooms that they are found in. The detail is a nod to tradition, but the white and clean muted colours add a contemporary feel to contrast the Victorian motifs.
Coving Row Wallpaper
Cracked Up Wallpaper echoes distressed plaster which is referenced throughout the collection. The split of the paint has been over exaggerated in scale to add a subtle drama to the design. The Stucco Crackle Wallpaper features intricate, detailed and delicate illustrations. Each wallpaper design has been handmade in Timorous Beasties studio in Glasgow.
Acanthus Leaf Wallpaper
The Stucco Stripe hand printed linen incorporates a vertical repeat pattern of intricately drawn baroque.
The contrast of the bold print with the simplicity of the white colourway balances the elegant design. Le Grande Baroque features an exquisite design which is enhanced by the beautiful drape of the linen fabric. The hand printed design is subtle yet dramatic, pared down to a single colour of opaque white.
Cornice Crown Wallpaper
The textural hand printed fabrics are complimented by two woven jacquard fabrics, Stucco Allover and Paint Crackle. Stucco Allover is a very fine woven fabric. Timorous Beasties produced the design as a weave because of the density and detail of the drawing. The Paint Crackle design appears as if the fabric has split, adding texture and depth. All fabrics are suitable for drapery and light upholstery.
The Tudor Rose lace has been woven in Ayrshire, Scotland, in the only remaining patterned Nottingham Lace mill left in the UK. Tudor Rose has been designed on an unprecedented scale, rarely envisioned in lace fabric. When the fabric is drawn together, the design disappears into folds of the curtain, but when drawn open, the full dramatic scale of the pattern is revealed. The elegant and intricate design diffuses light and offers a dappled pattern of privacy to an interior space.
The designs within the Stucco Collection work seamlessly together to create a cohesive whole or can be styled individually, working in a multitude of interior settings. Further designs and accessories will be added to the Stucco Collection throughout 2024.
