Vintners Lanes: A Heritage-Infused Bowling Experience in the Heart of Greenwich by DesignLSM

DesignLSM, the award-winning design agency, is delighted to present its latest London project, Vintners Lanes, located off Vintners Yard behind the renowned Davy’s Wine Vaults on Greenwich High Road. Having opened its doors on 15 November 2024, this new venue transforms the upper floor of a historic building into a dynamic and immersive bowling alley. Complete with an atmospheric bar and lounge that reimagines its rich heritage for modern audiences. Inspired by the building’s Victorian industrial backdrop, Vintners Lanes celebrates its stories past and present of brewing and alcohol merchantry that the brand is so well known for.

A Victorian Warehouse Revival, Distilling Industrial and Social ‘Spirit’ in Greenwich’s New Bowling Experience

The building, which dates back to the 1850s, is a significant site for Davy’s, one of London’s oldest wine merchants. Since the 1970’s, the venue has played a pivotal role in the merchant’s operations, serving as cellars and a warehouse for the distribution of wine, spirits, and beer. DesignLSM has taken this as inspiration embracing the building’s original brickwork, concrete features, and historical detailing and juxtaposing these with atmospheric lighting to evoke a timeless yet forward-thinking aesthetic.

As guests step into Vintners Lanes, they are greeted with illuminated bottle walls divided into triangular compartments, akin to the shaping of industrial truss, setting the tone for the space’s celebration of craftsmanship and heritage. Chesterfield-inspired sofas, vintage factory lights, and original furniture found within the building itself have been brought back to life, enriching the space with character.

At the heart of the venue, the six bespoke bowling lanes blend the old with the new. Timber flooring, reminiscent of traditional warehouses, stretches underfoot, while Victorian tin ceiling panels hang above, lending a touch of nostalgia. Large murals and signwriting painted onto exposed brick walls, pay homage to Davy’s roots, with a feature mural proudly declaring ‘Est. 1870’. The lanes are bordered by mesh screens and plush seating, creating semi-private enclaves that are perfect for groups to gather and enjoy an evening of friendly competition, whilst the end of the lanes is inspired by stacking barrels, shining a striking illumination to keep guests focused on the game. The choice of these elements reflects DesignLSM’s focus on retaining authenticity while ensuring the space feels vibrant and engaging.

The bar and lounge area, adjacent to the lanes, is a striking combination of industrial and luxurious design. Blackened steel crittall screens divide the space, while the bar itself, with its blackened steel front and mirrored panels, acts as a focal point that draws visitors in. The ceiling, adorned with antique mirror panels, creates a glowing, inviting atmosphere, whilst red steel shelving displays vintage bowling pins, adding a playful nod to the venue.

The lounge reflects a more refined and elevated design, with timber panelling, mirrors, Victorian patterned flooring, and plush upholstered chairs reflecting the aesthetic of the ‘managers office’. The artwork reflects items found upon the manager’s desk, such as vintage timecards.

The artwork through the scheme has been carefully curated to reimagine a Victorian era. For example, manufacturing scenes with whimsical twists by replacing the traditional items on the production line with the creation of bowling balls and pins, adding a touch of humour.

An underlying commitment to sustainability is evident in the thoughtful reuse of materials. Approximately 75% of the furniture and lighting has been repurposed from items found within the building’s basement. By highlighting the existing architecture — keeping the ceilings exposed and showcasing the original brickwork — DesignLSM has minimised the need for new materials, creating an environmentally conscious design that respects the heritage of the building.

Vintners Lanes caters to a diverse audience, from local residents and tourists to students and families. With a capacity of 100 guests, the venue serves up an array of food and drink options, including burgers, pizzas, and a full bar service, enhancing its appeal as a versatile competitive socialising and dynamic destination.

Positioned in a prime location a mere stone’s throw from Greenwich’s mainline and DLR station, the venue is within quick and easy reach from both the City and Canary Wharf, attracting a corporate audience to experience the breadth of offering at Vintners Lanes and its surrounding hub. Vintners Lanes breathes new life into this key heritage landmark and places it firmly on the map as being a key go to destination in London, whilst building on its presence as an integral part of the local community’s vibrant social scene, promising an unforgettable experience that celebrates tradition and social connection.
